Abstract

This study aims to analyze cross-cultural communication practices displayed in Ueno Family Japan YouTube content through the perspective of cultural proximity theory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques consisting of non-participatory observation and documentation of video content on the Ueno Family Japan YouTube channel from February to June 2025. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was tested using source and technique triangulation. The results show that cross-cultural communication practices in Ueno Family Japan content are reflected in the alternating use of Indonesian, Japanese, and Javanese as a form of communication accommodation, the application of cultural similarities in daily life, the formation of social ties among the Indonesian diaspora in Japan, and the representation of universal cultural values ​​such as kinship, tolerance, cooperation, and mutual respect. The content demonstrates a process of cultural adaptation without losing the cultural identity of each family member. The conclusion of this study indicates that cultural proximity theory is relevant in explaining audience acceptance of Ueno Family Japan content because the proximity of language, culture, social relations, and universal values ​​can build emotional bonds and increase the appeal of family vlog content on digital media.
